Workbench provides high-quality training space and programs specifically for coffee professionals. Our roots are in the technical service world of specialty coffee, and we are uniquely equipped to provide you with the right solution for your professional development needs. 

Our Story

Workbench Coffee Labs opened its doors in January 2015, realizing another vision of Marty and Tooti Roe. The Roes have been humble fixtures in the midwest coffee scene through their coffee equipment maintenance and repair company, Service Call, LLC. In 2013, they added a retail element to their business called About The Coffee. About The Coffee serves as a toy store for both professional and amateur coffee geeks who love to brew coffee at home.

It then became apparent that they were uniquely positioned to offer professional development opportunities to coffee industry in a space that was neutral and not affiliated with a roasting company or green coffee importer. This lead them to relocate their operation to a 15,000 square-foot building and the creation of Workbench Coffee Labs.

We are a team of people who love coffee and interact with professionals all along the supply chain.


Our Facility

Centrally located in the middle of the map, Workbench lives within the heart of Kansas City’s booming and interactive coffee scene. A 16,000 square-foot building houses our offices and training spaces including our state-of-the-art coffee laboratory, a large classroom space, and individual training rooms.

With plenty of space and in-house know-how, we are uniquely equipped to create custom environments for our customers.

Workbench shares space with Service Call, About The Coffee and two independent coffee consulting practices, making our home a destination for coffee professionals and enthusiasts in the Midwest.

SCA Certified Laboratory
Our cupping lab is certified by the Specialty Coffee Association and is qualified to host educational programs by the Coffee Quality Institute (Q Grading) and the SCA. We are also well-trained in providing services to support these activities.

Dependable Equipment
As an outgrowth of Service Call, LLC, we don’t have technicians on-call. We are the technicians. You can count on using equipment that works, and rapid response to any issues that may arise.

Our team has experience arranging equipment for many situations. From the mobility of trade-show installations to the exacting requirements of a barista competition, our technicians can provide you with exactly what you need to make your training a success.
